Common Skiing Injuries: Knee Ligament Sprain
According to Paletta et al, MCL injuries account for 15%-20% of all skiing injuries and 60% of knee injuries.
The MCL is typically injured when an outside(valgus) force makes the knee go inward. The injury commonly occurs during a fall, which we all know can happen frequently while skiing.
An Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear andmeniscus tear commonly happen at the same time as an MCL tear because they result from the same or similar forces.
Pain, swelling and instability are all common with this injury. It is possible that you will lose some joint range of motion and struggle to put weight throughyour leg initially. You may feel unstable when walking on uneven ground or tryto change directions quickly.
If you have any of these signs and symptoms,it is suggested you see a Doctor or Physical Therapist.
MCL injuries can be managed non-operatively unless you have a severe tear or multiple injuries. Initially rest, ice, compression, and elevation are suggested. Once the initial pain and swelling has been controlled, then graded exercise underthe guidance of a Physical Therapist is suggested.
