Q&A: One man’s journey from torn to shredded.
UP Medical
Meet Marcell, school administrator for an International school and an avid bodybuilder. Incredibly passionate about fitness, Marcell sought out help from UP Clinic after he had a complete tear and retraction of his pec major after doing a barbell bench press while back in his home country.
After surgery, he was recommended no therapy for six weeks… not the kind of advice needed to get back to where he wanted to be. He soon began prioritizing his rehabilitation on his own:
“I searched online and some great reviews about UP Clinic,” he said, and decided to come in and give the clinic a try.
Introduced to one of our therapists Amari, they immediately hit it off and started working to help Marcell get back to his training.
Amari adds, “Marcell came in with almost 0 range of motion, but now almost six-months post op, he is nearly back to his prime in terms of weight capacity. During their work together, the biggest priority was to improve Marcells range of motion utilizing mobility and strength exercises.
This regiment included things like assisted shoulder flexion repetitions, Turkish get ups, side planks, single arm battle ropes and even single-handed wall push ups. From adding in these progressions, and more, Marcell was able to get back to his standard weight for the bench press. Of course our standard YBT test and FMS screen [Move Well Before Moving Often] were both added in at the beginning and end of treatment to evaluate the progress.
Over the course of five months, Marcell did his exercises religiously, saying his biggest fear was “overcoming having a re-tear.”
But by trusting the process and working with Amari, Marcell’s fears were gradually resolved. If you’ve read some of our previous articles, you’ll know the relationship built between therapist and patient is an incredibly important one and can greatly help the healing process.
“Amari, the professional and dedicated physiotherapist, is characterized by support, care, and encouragement throughout my recovery and progress.
[He] consistently demonstrated his commitment to my well-being, going above and beyond to ensure that I felt safe and relaxed during my sessions. His attentiveness to my comfort and peace of mind created an environment conducive to healing and growth.
What truly sets Amari apart is his ability to celebrate and acknowledge even the smallest accomplishments or achievements I made along the way. Whether it was a small milestone or a significant breakthrough, Amari recognized my progress and took the time to genuinely congratulate me. This positive reinforcement provided me with a sense of motivation and validation, ultimately contributing to my overall well-being and success in my journey to recovery.
Amari’s unwavering support, genuine care, and willingness to celebrate my achievements made my relationship with him truly remarkable. His approach to physiotherapy went beyond the technical aspects of his profession, creating a nurturing and empowering experience that undoubtedly played a significant role in my recovery and progress.”
How’s that for some powerful credibility?
Marcell adds he was impressed by how “accurate Amari’s predictions were,” being able to know exactly what progress Marcell would be at in his next session.
Amari adds that “I was struck by the determination and meticulous details Marcell put into his therapeutic exercises.
He followed instructions to the letter and that made this process so much easier. I knew exactly what he did, how many times, what worked and what didn’t; what felt weird and how those feelings changed with time thanks to his feedback. Excellent HEP compliance paved the way.
It was amazing to see him go from struggling to hold a plastic bar to doing single arm handstands in just a few months. Most people fail to keep in mind that once something is heavily injured, it’s not just the body that suffers. You subconsciously avoid using that structure to the point everything becomes weaker and your perception of what you can do just evaporates with time.
On his first day he scored 60/600 points for ‘confidence to return to his prime level’. He accumulated a whopping 540 points in his last test, showing he is well on his way to fighting bears and slaying dragons.
Don’t give in to your fears. You’re capable of doing so much more than what you think!
Respect your body but always remember: ‘You’re primed for greatness.’
Offering advice to future patients, Marcell adds the most important thing he learned from this experience was to: “Trust the process! Trust your physiotherapist!,” and “find a happy place during painful treatments!”
