Q&A: Dr. Park (Rehabilitation)

Dr. Park has been with UP since August 2022. A sports-enthusiast himself – after his daily work he often goes swimming or hits the driving range for a swing – his personal hobbies allow him to better understand how his patients feel, or what they’re going through. Oftentimes he’ll meet someone while playing sports, who is pushing through pain to enjoy their hobby. Dr. Park will talk to them, sharing ideas on how to re-think their treatment plans to help them continue to move, but with less pain.
Dr. Park incorporates his personal experience on the sports field, his comprehensive medical knowledge and his sincere commitment to working with patients through a holistic approach to care, from treatment to rehabilitation to prevention.

Tell us more about why you call yourself a ‘sports doctor’
I’m both a doctor who treats patients and a true sports enthusiast. In college, I was a starting striker on the varsity soccer team. These days, I’m passionate about golf, and skiing, and am currently preparing for a triathlon. My personal experience with sports injuries and recovery has formed the foundation of my medical philosophy. So, I don’t just tell patients to “stop exercising and rest.” Instead, I work with them to understand how they can safely return to sports.

02
How do you feel your personal experiences influence or support your clinical care?
Knowledge from books isn’t enough to fully understand a patient’s pain. My personal experience with injury and recovery has taught me to view patients’ descriptions as “a part of life” rather than simply “symptom data.” When developing treatment plans, I consider the injury site and the patient’s goals, such as “how to help them return to their beloved sport.”

03
What values do you hold within your personal medical practice?
“I only recommend treatments that I’ve personally experienced and thoroughly researched.” Whenever a new treatment emerges, I consult the literature, analyze international guidelines, and, if necessary, personally try the treatment and recovery process to ensure its safety and effectiveness. This is how I build trust with my patients.

04
You also do a lot of work with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), as well as sodium hyaluronate (HA) treatments – can you share more about these?
Yes, these two treatments are core therapies in regenerative medicine. I thoroughly study the latest national and international guidelines and share my experience.

05
In terms of your treatment process, how do you work with patients?
I follow three core steps: pain control → functional restoration → problem resolution and re-injury prevention. I combine injections, acupuncture, physical therapy, and sports rehabilitation based on the patient’s condition, and meticulously monitor every detail of recovery. This principle remains constant for both professional athletes and those simply seeking to resume daily activities.
06
Are there any goals you are working towards?
My goal is very clear: “To enable every patient to receive more precise and personalized treatment. To enable them to exercise for a lifetime, injury-free, longer, and with greater joy.” I will continue to research and promote a treatment strategy that integrates rehabilitation, prevention, and performance improvement.

07
Are there any final words you would like to share to your patients?
An injury isn’t the end of sports; it’s an opportunity to start over. I hope my patients leave my office with the confidence that they can get moving again.
